With Gabriel (1996), Roy Davis Jr. and Peven Everett created a timeless house music anthem, mixing electronic groove and soul and gospel influences

Originally born in California, Roy Davis moved to Chicago’s south side early in his childhood. After being turned on by legendary acid-house pioneers like Phuture and Lil’ Louis, he became a DJ and began producing as well, with his first single, 20 Below recorded for the Jack Trax label. Added on board the Chicago house production team Phuture, as a replacement for DJ Pierre, Roy Davis Jr. later followed his mentor to New York and worked at Strictly Rhythm, recording his own singles for Force Inc., Big Big Trax and Power Music… This is one of his 90’s greatest hit. I can’t remember how many times I’ve played it on the radio, even in parties… It’s a beautiful song ; one of those you will remember for your entire life. It’s not only a must have, it’s a must sing…

Words about the record…

Gabriel by Roy Davis Jr. featuring Peven Everett, released in 1996, is a timeless house music classic that marked a turning point in the genre by introducing soul and gospel influences in an innovative and refreshing way. The track is a masterpiece of garage house, where Peven Everett’s vocals bring a warmth and spiritual intensity that contrasts with the subtle electronic beats of Roy Davis Jr.’s production. With a deep, hypnotic bass line, discreet brass, and groove-infused percussion, Gabriel stands out for his emotional depth and sense of escape.
Everett’s vocals, both powerful and emotive, add an almost celestial dimension, particularly when the lyrics touch on themes of redemption and spirituality. The chorus, with its memorable line « I see angels, » transports the listener into an almost mystical atmosphere, like an elevation towards something pure and sacred. The track had a huge impact on house culture, becoming an anthem in clubs and festivals and influencing a generation of producers. His fusion of house and soul has helped broaden the horizons of electronic music, while remaining accessible and deeply emotional. Both introspective and euphoric, Gabriel is a classic that continues to resonate today, with its unique ability to transcend genre boundaries and capture a moment of authenticity and passion.
